The most common mistake with quinceañera makeup is ageing the girl. With heavy contour and thick foundation, a fifteen-year-old ends up looking twenty-five in the photographs, and those photographs last forever. My job is the opposite: luminous skin, soft features, and a face she still recognises in the mirror.
Young skin also behaves differently. It often produces more oil through the T-zone and there may be breakouts or texture, so the prep changes: mattifying primer only where it is needed, spot coverage instead of a thick layer of foundation, and setting only the areas that shine.
If the quinceañera is new to Colombia, it is worth saying that this is a much bigger occasion here than a fifteenth birthday elsewhere. There is usually a photo session before the party and a formal waltz, which means the makeup has to hold for considerably longer than an evening out.
She sends me the photos she likes from Pinterest or Instagram, and I tell her honestly what will work with her features and skin tone and what will not.
We do it before the party. It is also the moment to find out whether she likes how lashes feel or would rather keep things softer.
I arrive early enough to do her first, without rushing, then the rest of the group, so she is ready before the photo session.
